Masaba Gupta is a young fashion designer, who graduated from SNDT Mumbai, and has created a distinct name for herself with her quirky sensibilities, that have amassed praise from her critics. The meaning of ‘Masaba’ is ‘wild flower’ in African language and that is perhaps reflected in her work which is wild, revolutionary and fresh in essence. At a young age, Masaba has achieved worldwide success, and has begun to rub shoulders with big names in the Indian fashion circuit. From eclectic dhotis and angrakhas, to silk sarees and jumpsuits, she provided fashion that was very different and fresh. Masaba consciously avoids gorgeous designs, and works on her pricing and accessibility, so that, her brand can reach out to potential customers. Masaba’s garments are retailed in leading stores across India, and are much in vogue, as she has a bold and fierce style that is traditional, yet Bohemian and simplistic. She says that she is inspired by her African and Indian roots, and her mother’s distinctive style and color choice are another quality, that she has inherited . Bohemian traits of her personality can be seen all over her unique designs. Her signature style showcases neat and quirky silhouettes and distinct use of dupattas like drapes in gowns and skirt. Masaba Gupta collections can be distinguished by bold retro-styled prints, which is a welcome change from prevalent embroidery, and zardosi work. She has brought in a new contemporary dimension to the Indian ramps with her fluid, audacious and colourful designs, truly accentuating the free spirit of the new generation of Indian women. Masaba showcased her collection’s Wanderess’ in the opening show at Lakme Fashion Week Winter/ Festive 2014. Actress Shilpa Shetty acted as the showstopper, and created headlines in Masaba’s side cut gown with dupatta drape. This collection highlighted Masaba’s signature free, spirited, retro-designs in Goan prints. Masaba Gupta went an extra mile with affordable fashion, when she launched her very own brand ‘Masaba Lite’ to avail her casual designs at a low price. She understands that majority of her buyers belong to an early-twenty age group and her affordable line ‘Masaba Lite’ will bring sarees in a price range of Rs 400- 4000, so that, it will be affordable for young Indian girls.
