Educational accreditation is the measure by taking recourse to which the quality and services of an institute are judged by an external body to ascertain whether the applicable standards are adequate. If the external agency finds out that the standards are fulfilled, then the accredited status is endowed on the institute. Generally in most countries the role of accreditation is carried out by a government organization.

It is the yardstick which shows the public that a school has met and is maintaining a high standard at par with all the renowned institutes of the world. Accredited institutes look for different attributes, depending on the particular field the school caters to. However, all schools are subject to some basic principles of accreditation, which, they have to maintain irrespective of the field, in which, they are specializing in. For example, all accrediting institutes hold that a school must have a clear cut objective that aims to serve and work for the betterment of the students. These accrediting agencies test, whether the school has the resources to meet its objective.

Added to this, the institute will have to commit to unannounced external reviews at periodic intervals as well as strict internal review programs which ensures that the accreditation standards have been dealt with perfectly by the institute.

Accreditation should not be dismissed as trifle. An institute being backed by a good accrediting agency will draw the attention of students. Once a student graduates and is on the lookout for a job, employers take into consideration the institute and whether it is accredited by a reliable agency.
