Apparel Manufacturing, Marketing and Merchandising

Overview

The textile, textile product, and apparel manufacturing industries are inclusive of establishments that process fiber into fabric, fabric into clothing and then made into other textile products.  Most apparel manufacturers worldwide rely on people to cut and sew pieces of fabric together. However the modern industry is becoming highly automated.  They produce a variety of goods, some of which are sold to the consumer.  Others are sold as inputs to the manufacture of other products. Natural and synthetic fibers are used to produce threads and yarns .They can then be woven, knitted, or pressed or otherwise bonded into fabrics.

Coatings and finishes are applied to the fabrics to enhance the decorative patterns.  Fabrics are used to make many products, including awnings, tents, carpets and rugs, as well as a variety of linens such as curtains, tablecloths, towels, and sheets. The principal use of fabrics is to make apparel.  The apparel manufacturing  industry produce many knitted clothing products which includes hosiery and socks, shirts, sweaters, and underwear. They also produce many cut-and-sew clothing items like dresses, suits, shirts, and trousers.

How You Learn

Fashion designers are the main artists of the apparel industry. They create ideas for a huge range of products which includes coats, suits, dresses, hats, and underwear. Fashion designers begin the procedure by making rough sketches of garments or accessories .They use computer-assisted design (CAD) software to implement their designs. This software can print detailed designs from a computer drawing. It is also responsible for storing fashion styles and colors that can be accessed .They can be easily changed.

 Designers create the pattern pieces that will be used to construct the finished garment. Besides, they also measure and draw pattern pieces to actual size on paper.  They use these pieces to measure and cut pattern pieces in a sample fabric.

 Designers sew these pieces together and fit them into a model. They examine the sample garment and make changes until they get the perfect effect they want. Some designers take the help of assistants to cut and sew pattern pieces to their specifications.

What You Learn

 Training is offered to help people to work well in a team-oriented environment. Many firms have established training centers or host seminars. They encourage employee self-direction and responsibility and work for the development of interpersonal skills. On account of the emphasis on teamwork and the small number of management levels in modern textile mills, firms give importance to workers who show initiative and communicate effectively .

Cutters and pressers are trained on the job. Patternmakers and markers usually have technical or trade school training. All these workers must understand textile characteristics and they should have a good sense of three-dimensional space.

Traditional cutters need exceptional hand-eye coordination. Patternmakers and markers usually design pattern pieces and layouts on a computer screen.  People who have just entered into these jobs should learn basic computer skills. Those running automatic cutting machines need technical training, which is available from vocational schools.

They are trained on the job for a period of several weeks to several months, depending on their previous experience and the function for which they are training. Operators usually begin by performing simple tasks .Gradually ,they work their way up to more difficult  fabrics as they gain experience .Advancement often takes the form of higher wages as workers become more experienced, although operators who have good people and organizational skills may become supervisors. Operators who have high school diplomas and some vocational school training have better chances of prospering in this kind of profession.

Succeeding in fashion merchandising requires more than a love of fashion. Though the love for fashion  is important, one must also have the right business and marketing skills in order to pursue opportunities in the industry .One should develop one’s business and marketing skill set and familiarize oneself with some key abilities, such as:

Analytical Ability

Problem solving and analytics skills are essential for any businessperson. Fashion merchandisers should be able to establish and abide by a budget when they are promoting and selling a product .Besides this, fashion merchandisers must be able to envision what kind of budget the target market is working with. Fashion merchandisers should be able to determine how a designer’s line fits into a target customer’s budget.

Whether the designs will meet the function needs of the consumer is another area of concern. The target customer must not only want and need the product, but they should also be able to afford it. One should take into consideration a complex set of issues and data in order to determine the strategy. Analytical ability is key to fashion merchandising.

Buying, Selling, Promoting

Professionals are supposed to attend fashions shows, buy fashion products .They are also responsible for negotiating with suppliers and manufacturers, manage retail stores, design in-store displays, and develop advertising and marketing strategies .These tasks  require knowledge of buying, selling and promoting. While working with a designer, fashion merchandisers will be responsible for selling the designer’s product to stores. It requires knowledge of the target market and market trends.

 Those working for a retail store will be responsible for buying new lines or items to compliment pre-existing lines. They are also responsible for promoting these lines. Creativity is an important skill which should be mastered especially when designing displays or ad campaigns.

 

Communication Skills

Fashion merchandisers should know how to negotiate with manufacturers, pitch fashion lines to buyers .They should spread marketing messages to customers. Communication skills are essential for success in this field .One has to be articulate and confident.

 

Forecasting Abilities

It may also be crucial for fashion merchandisers to be familiar with past fashion trends, current trends and industry developments.  Forecasting allows one to make informed decisions when one is promoting, buying or selling.
